No one really expected Xysma to write two minute grindcore bursts on their third album Deluxe, even though it had only been four years since the band imported death metal to Finland with their debut demo Swarming of the Maggots (1989).? Xysma had already begun the refinement of their distinctive blend of metal and rock on their first full length Yeah! (1990). The 2nd album First and Magical, from 1992, is still a metal record, with blast beats intertwining with bossa nova samples and a wailing hippie organ.?? Deluxe is a logical step still further away from underground grindcore. The result is an irresistible mashup of growling death metal vocals, heavy rock guitars and rock'n'roll, with a weird underlying pop sensibility. Svart released First and Magical on vinyl in 2010. It sold out quickly, but if you missed it, stop crying and buy Deluxe instead! The vinyl is wrapped in a gatefold jacket and also features a big 12 page booklet with unseen photos and an essay by renowned writer Ville SimilÀ.
