NEBENWIRKUNG
Macht nur so weiter
LP
NEBENWIRKUNG, more than any other band, embodies German-language hardcore punk from Bremen. After all, this band has been around since 1980, which is an incredible 43 years. Their musical beginnings in the eighties were a bit bumpy, but of their two singles from back then, the songs "Gewalt" (Violence) and "Fick den Papst" (Fuck the Pope) are essential listening for anyone into German punk. Bremen has always been a hardcore punk city, home to the infamous Anti-Skinhead League (A.S.L.), which used to beat up all the right-wingers. And when Bremen punks traveled out of town in groups, there was often trouble and brawls. This didn't exactly endear Bremen to the locals. In later years, however, it was precisely the Bremen punks who initiated the awesome B.O.B. festival (alternating between festivals in Bremen, Oakland/USA, and Bath/UK), where NEBENWIRKUNG were frequent performers. Over the years, their music has steadily improved, resulting in an absolutely killer live performance. Following their 2018 split LP with the Swedish band BOMFORS, they've released a new 13-track album. It features consistently fast, German-language hardcore punk songs that are on par with bands like VKJ, TOXOPLASMA, UPRIGHT CITIZENS, or NEUROTIC ARSEHOLES. Furthermore, NEBENWIRKUNG deliver lyrics that hit the nail on the head, as in tracks like "Frieden" (Peace), "Holzköpfe der Nation" (Blockheads of the Nation), "Die Wiege der Menschheit" (The Cradle of Humanity), "No war," and "Macht nur so weiter!"
