HELLNATION
Thrashwave
CD
Hellnation's 2002 offering, Thrash Wave, combines 36 sonic blasts of uniquely indistinguishable racket culled from the group's "best" EP and compilation entries. As is the case with every Hellnation disc, one slice of utter white noise follows another until it all mercifully comes to an end. The bona fide epic closer "Get Back" caps things off with a marathon running time of 2:02 -- that's over a minute longer than the average Hellnation "song." There are no highlights, and there are no soft spots. There's just a parade of relentless blows to the inner ear meant to punish listeners. The great thing about bands like Hellnation is their forceful challenge to anyone bold enough to sit through one of their recordings. This experience can inspire some interesting questions about the value of expression presented so fundamentally. It's theory in practice. How each listener responds to such an exercise exposes more about their own beliefs than those of Hellnation. For 15 bucks, that's more personal insight than you can get from just about any self-help program. Not a bad deal. ~ Vincent Jeffries A collection of 36 tracks in 30 minutes compiled from 7 inch releases, EPs and box sets. Cover art by Furnio who has done covers for Paintbox, Slight Slappers, and Deathside.
