GENERAL SURGERY/ BODYBAG
Split
LP
General Surgery return to share wax with Bodybag. Let's scrub up and see what we can hear... General Surgery are a legendary cult grind collective, whose penchant for performing illegal Carcass cloning experiments sometimes sees them derided as mere emulators. They've grown well past that though, taking their tales of the medical macabre in a delightfully more Swe-death direction, which makes sense given their pedigree. General Surgery want to rock their grind out and have fun, while still coming off as ripely obscene. All of this they accomplish on their side of this split. The same echo-y autopsy samples are present, the same rollicking bass and chugging blast'n'groove riffs, the same obscure medical textbook lyrics of their previous releases but with a finely honed sense of songwriting -- General Surgery take a scalpel to grindcore, never losing any urgency despite taking time to actually craft unique tracks. They've also taken more care to layer on some nasty melodic leads ala late-period Dismember and it suits them well. Overall, these new General Surgery tracks rate among the best they've written. Bodybag, by comparison, come across a bit stiff. Granted they haven't had over twenty years with which to improve so think of them more as apprentice coroners than truly skilled morticians. What's immediate is that a) Bodybag clearly worship their split mates by basically sounding exactly like them (just dirtier); and b) they layer in some interesting doom breaks into their noisy, muddy grind resulting in a sound that 60% General Surgery, 40% Coffins and 100% unoriginal, though fun. One could envision them amounting to something if they kept at it.
