AGATHOCLES
Grind Is Protest
LP
Reviewing an Agathocles LP is much akin to passively listening to an Anal Cunt album. The bands take different approaches to grind, conceptually moreso than sonically, but within the confines of each group's respective catalog it's difficult to accomplish more than a numbing consternation of the sheer interchangeable nature of it all. It's energetic and rousing to some extent, and live I'm sure it kills, but I'm equally certain that fans at an Agathocles show are not shouting out individual song requests. So if this ends up coming off like a capsule review, it was never an option that it be anything but. _Grind Is Protest_ consists of 40 tracks of ball stomping micro songs, and if you've never heard Agathocles at all, they cling much closer to the punk side of grind. Which unfortunately means that lyrically you have a combination of sociopolitical activism and poop jokes, each with roughly the same amount of textual depth. For example, the entirety of "Tension"'s lyrics consists of "Pressure / I'm messed up / Pressure / I'm fucked up". Serves its purpose, but that 7.0 is probably a bit generous considering the complete absence of shelf life.
